Questions, answered

Will worm castings burn my plants?

No. That's one of the biggest advantages over synthetic fertilizers. Worm castings have a naturally mild nutrient profile with no salts that cause fertilizer burn. You can apply them directly to roots, top-dress generously, or mix them into potting soil at a high ratio without worrying about damage. Safe even for sensitive seedlings and delicate tropical houseplants.

Are Sweet Leaf castings OMRI organic?

Yes. Sweet Leaf worm castings are OMRI Listed, which means they've been independently reviewed and approved for use in certified organic production. We keep our certification current and test every batch. When the bag says organic, it means it. Look for the OMRI Listed mark on every package.

Do worm castings smell bad?

A fresh bag of worm castings should smell earthy, like rich soil after rain. If you've ever opened a bag and been hit with ammonia or a rotten odor, the material wasn't properly processed or sat too long. Our castings are screened and freshness-dated so the microbial life stays active and the smell stays pleasant. Most customers describe it as "good dirt."

Are they safe around pets and kids?

Yes. Worm castings are non-toxic and made from food-grade organic feedstock with no harsh chemicals or synthetic additives. We still recommend storing any fertilizer away from children and pets and washing hands after gardening. If a pet or toddler gets into the bag, there's no cause for alarm, but call your vet or pediatrician if you have concerns.

How much should I use?

A good starting point: mix up to 20 to 25% worm castings into your potting mix (about 1 part castings to 4 parts medium). For established plants, top-dress with a half-inch layer around the base and water in. For outdoor garden beds, work in 1 to 2 cups per square foot. For seeds and seedlings, use 10 to 15%. They're gentle enough for direct contact. When in doubt, start light and watch how your plants respond over a few weeks.

How often should I apply them?

For houseplants, top-dress once every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season (spring through early fall). Outdoor vegetable gardens benefit from an application at planting time and a mid-season boost. Perennial beds and lawn areas can get a light annual application. Because castings release nutrients slowly and won't burn, you have a wide margin. More frequent, lighter applications beat one heavy dose per year.

How long do they stay good?

Stored in a cool, dry place with the bag loosely sealed, worm castings stay effective for 1 to 2 years. Live microbial activity is highest in the first 6 months, which is why we freshness-date every bag. A bag that's been sitting open in a hot garage for a year is still useful as a soil amendment. It just won't have the same microbial punch. For best results, use within 12 months of the freshness date on the bag.

How are Sweet Leaf castings different from cheap compost?

Most cheap compost is thermally processed plant or food waste. It may look like dark crumbly soil, but it has minimal microbial life, inconsistent nutrients, and can contain weed seeds or pathogens if not heated properly. Worm castings are processed differently. Worms convert organic matter into a biologically rich, plant-available nutrient package with a stable, slow-release profile and a thriving microbial ecosystem. You'd need to apply 3 to 5 times more bulk compost to get the same biological effect.
